Kevin Bacon Is Helping Get 40,000 Essentials Kits To The Homeless And Children In Need

Actor Kevin Bacon is beginning his golden years by providing 40,000 essentials kits to the homeless and children in need.

Kevin Bacon’s nonprofit, sixdegrees.org, gathers essentials that the homeless might need, such as food, water, toothbrushes, shampoo and clothes, puts them into a backpack and then distributes them to people in need.

“Essentially what happens, in a community, you have a grassroots organization that has highlighted people who are in need of basic essentials,” Kevin shared. “They could be children, they could be people who don’t have a house, or a home, and we gather some sort of a backpack to hold these essential items; food items, water, shampoo, etc. We then get volunteers from the community to spend a couple hours just loading these things up.”

“So it kind of increases volunteerism and giving back. Also a lot of what sixdegrees.org has been about is finding grassroots organizations, not huge huge charities but more like small groups in communities, boots on the ground who are looking to help out people in need.”

Kevin has already provided thousands of the homeless and children in need with essentials kits, and now for the 40th anniversary of his movie Footloose, he plans to give 40,000 more.

“So the idea is to build 40,000 of these [essentials kits],” he said.

Kevin shared how he enjoys doing something positive, and enjoys encouraging people in local communities to begin volunteering their time.

“To me one of the most exciting pieces is the volunteerism. Spending time doing something of a positive nature, it gives back both ways.”

For one of Kevin’s recent giving events, he, his brother and volunteers gave out 300 backpacks to children in need.

“One of the first building kit events that we did, we went out and hung out with these people from this community, built 300 backpacks going to kids in the area, and you know, it’s such a light lift, and it feels so good to do, and it has such a positive effect.”

Kevin founded his nonprofit, sixdegrees.org, in 2007, after being inspired by Paul Newman to give back to the community.

“At a certain point, when I had children and I kind of grew up, and I’d read the newspaper and I’d see the things that were happening in the world, I thought, ‘Well… I gotta step outside of me,'” Kevin said. “I looked at Paul Newman and what he had done with the tomato sauce and the salad dressing [Newman’s Own] and I thought, you know, that’s cool, it’s something where he’s taken this incredible gift, this incredible success that he has, and he’s figured out a way to make it into something positive. I was kind of scratching my head as to what that might be [for me], so I went and got the domain sixdegrees.org, and started talking to smart people.”

Kevin enjoys putting as much good energy as he can out into the world.

“I try to show compassion to people I come into contact with and try to put good out, as much good as I can,” he said.
