91 Year Old Terminally Ill Hospital Patient Knits Over 9000 Winter Hats For The Homeless

3

“Why do I do it? It just makes me feel good,” Morrie Boogart said when asked why he spends his days knitting hats for the homeless. Morrie is a terminally ill patient at the Cambridge Manor hospice care facility in Michigan, and rather than focusing on his life ending, he chooses to focus on helping to relieve some of the suffering of the homeless.

As Morrie makes his winter hats, he adds a “rim” around the bottom to keep the ears of the homeless warm. Then they are delivered to shelters throughout the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. His care facility is currently accepting yarn donations to help him continue with his craft.

“This has been the best thing that’s happened to me because I just stay in my room,” he says. “I do it awfully slow.”

Morrie manages to complete one or two hats each day, and takes short coffee breaks in between.

Sometimes after we have suffered, we begin to become aware of the suffering of others and of the great pains and struggles those nearest to us face each day. The homeless have a very hard time staying warm and surviving the extremely cold winters of Michigan, but Morrie’s compassionate heart has been helping thousands of them stay a little bit warmer.

Since his story has been shared, people from all around the world have begun donating yarn to Morrie to use for his winter hats.

“The intent from the beginning was to give him something to do,” said Karen Lauters, Morrie’s daughter. “I’m amazed at how this is continuing to touch people’s lives and inspire them.”

“I have found that the yarn and cards, that have been sent to my dad, have lifted his spirit and given him a greater sense of purpose.”

Whatever our circumstances are in life, the love in our hearts will help us rise above them.

Man Turns Old Truck Into Mobile Shower For Homeless People To Get Clean, Warm And Keep Their Dignity

7

After having firsthand experience with the difficulties in life while being homeless, Jake Austin decided to make a difference for many of the struggling human beings he saw around his city of St. Louis, Missouri. He saw that one of the biggest discomforts his local homeless men and women faced was that they could not get a shower, sometimes for months at a time. So he set off to change that with a mobile shower on wheels project he calls Shower to the People.

Austin bought a truck on Craigslist for $5,000 and then setup a GoFundMe online to raise money for the remodel to install clean, portable showers inside of it. He met his goal and was able to create this beautiful truck which now offers showers to roughly 60 people each night.

Some of the grateful homeless were near tears when describing how thankful they were for this opportunity. Being able to have a clean, warm shower, and to shave and use shampoo are things most of us take for granted, but for someone who has nowhere to live or bathe, they can be a real treasure.

The importance of having a shower is something often overlooked when considering the needs of the homeless. Austin described how “people can get food and clothes, but if they haven’t had a shower in three months, they can’t get a job even flipping burgers.”

“The program isn’t just about getting people clean,” Austin says. “We’re doing this with the hopes of building relationships with people, connecting them with services, and getting them off the streets.”

So far, it’s been effective: Austin says the volunteers have connected several people with transitional living options, and brought others to renew their drivers licenses so they can apply for jobs and benefits.

But the most important part of Austin’s work is that the homeless people he encounters every day feel genuinely loved and cared for. For someone who has nothing; no family, nowhere to live and no one to help them, the kind hearts of volunteers at Shower to the People are like rays of sunshine on a cloudy winter.

A child’s compassionate heart is a beautiful thing: A neighbor in Chicago noticed one morning that a young boy was walking a blind deer from yard to yard and helping it find food to eat.

He took a picture and shared this act of kindness on Reddit, as bluecollarclassicist wrote, “There is a blind deer in our neighborhood and this boy (10 yrs old) walks her from one grass patch to another every day before school to make sure she finds food.”

The kind young man had noticed the deer having troubles due to being unable to see, and took it upon himself to walk his new friend each morning to different patches of grass to eat.

The beautiful picture was shared through social media, and wildlife experts gave some helpful advice on how to best help the deer, as the young man’s neighbor posted in a follow-up message,

“My wife and I took this photo yesterday after seeing this happen for a few days. My wife called the local wildlife rescue group a few towns over. They have a vet on staff and will be picking the animal up today to bring her [to] a forest preserve where she can be looked after and stay out of traffic. I hope she does ok because she was so docile. I wish I could do something for the kid. He’s probably going to miss her.”

“The deer is getting picked up today by a local animal rescue group (NOT animal control) and taken to a vet for assessment,” he wrote in a follow up comment. “It will likely be tagged and taken to a controlled forest preserve but they did say that since she seemed so docile that she might end up in an approved farm or petting zoo.”

We are all connected, and uncommon acts of kindness and compassion can inspire a community to come together and make the world a better place for all living beings.

If your heart was touched by this story of kindness, let it inspire you to share some love and kindness with a person or furry friend you encounter this week. Love and Gratitude ❤️

In just one week, the 579 students have done more than 3,000 acts of kindness.
“It’s crazy to see just how many wonderful things that they have done. Just because it’s the right thing to do,” teacher Jennifer Moon said.

They’re being kind and courteous to each other and their teachers, leaving positive and inspirational sticky notes and giving beautiful compliments to their classmates.  This habit of kindness being taught is sure to stay with them for the rest of their lives.

The challenge is part of the school’s theme, “Kind is Cool.” The school hopes the atmosphere that kindness creates will make for a better learning environment.
